The OAK CLIFF ASSASSIN
History or His Story?
(Dallas, TX) – From top to bottom, Kenton Paul (K.P. to his friends) and his alias, the OAK CLIFF ASSASSIN, has achieved success in every phase of the music industry. He's a multitalented performer whose expertise as a combination songwriter, rapper, and producer is rare and unparalleled. As a manager, promoter, and touring coordinator, O.C.A. has influenced and assisted the careers of many artists. Through self-determination and hard work, he's created a national network that will provide the marketing ammunition to shoot his label, LOCK DOWN MUSIC, straight to the top. With his many accomplishments, it makes you wonder if he's making history or just telling his story.
A graduate of South Oak Cliff High School, K.P. began rapping in the 10th grade with his best friend, Devoncy "Devo" Adams, a.k.a. the C.B.P. His Oak Cliff Assassin (O.C.A.) moniker came about after writing a song titled "Oak Cliff Assassin," while he was a member of the group called Eliminators – which also included C.B.P. and 3 other members. The Oak Cliff Assassin name stuck. In 1989, he started his first company, Lock Down Productions, with the help of Steven "D.J. Dark Fader" Dilworth, while attending the University of North Texas on a football scholarship. O.C.A. and Dark Fader then signed a production agreement with Mega Hit Productions in 1990, to work with producer Jerome "J-Bomb" Brown in producing themselves, as well as others. A year later, they promoted and performed on their first concert, DOPE JAM '91. This proved to be a valuable experience in a fruitful career to follow. After setting the foundation as an artist and producer first, O.C.A. and Henry Peoples launched Lock Down Records later that year. "Die 4 Da' Bass" was the first single released by Oak Cliff Assassin on his label. To capitalize on the local buzz and add to his relentless street promotion, he created the mini-concert series, FIVE DAYS OF FUNK. The shows were held on five consecutive days at five different college campuses in the Dallas/Ft. Worth metroplex.
Lock Down Records started building momentum by becoming one of the first labels to establish a mailing list for direct promotion and staying in contact with their new fans and core audience. A joint venture was formed in 1993 with VIP Records of Denton, Texas. The debut was a compilation CD entitled Out On Parole. In 1994, the Oak Cliff Assassin broke out his self-produced cassette EP, Da' Funky Hitman. With the assistance of Nathan "Godfather" Green, O.C.A. set up in-store appearances, radio interviews, and touring through out the Southeast. To show his achievements were not overlooked, The Dallas Observer nominated him for Best Rap/Hip Hop Artist. Strapped with more contacts, connections, and knowledge of the industry, 1995 was the official "coming out" year for the Oak Cliff Assassin. Using regional one stop distributors, Lock Down/V.I.P. Records blasted out O.C.A.'s first full CD, A Hit On Da' Hitman? The 18 song release was driven by the club anthem "Dallas To Houston" featuring Chain Gang and Ganksta N-I-P (formerly of Rap-A-Lot Records). The Observer must have agreed that the CD was outstanding; because, they nominated the Oak Cliff Assassin for Best Rap/Hip Hop Artist for the second year in a row.
A Hit On Da' Hitman? created such a strong demand that O.C.A. was able to self-negotiate and ink a national manufacturing and distribution deal for Lock Down with Midwest Records. O.C.A. proved to be up for the task. Lock Down/Midwest kicked off 1996 with Wassup Wit It?, the underground classic, by the Lock Down Inmates, which consisted of O.C.A., Godfather, Kanine, L-Double-E, Mista Dre, MX2, and ROC. O.C.A. established himself as one of the top underground artist when he dropped his second solo release, HATER FREE, in 1997. The 18 track self-produced album generated the most sales and notoriety of any Lock Down project to date. The buzz reached all the way to Germany. With Hater Free receiving great reviews and O.C.A. being the topic of several articles in Murder Dog and Source magazine, it allowed him to be mentioned in the same breath with some of the hottest rap artists. While landing a job as Vice-President of Promotions for Midwest, he spent 1998 organizing marketing strategies for several artists. He also unveiled the compilation O.C.A presents DIRTYTOWN DALLAS. The year ended with the debut album from Mettaforic, Premonitionz. He introduced all the artists on the label with O.C.A. presents LOCK DOWN CORRECTIONAL FACILITIES – WHO GONE DO DA' FOOL LIKE US? The Lock Down Inmates (featuring Strict-9) bombed the music scene in '99 with the hottest group album yet, Da' Drama Continues. In 2000, O.C.A. returned Lock Down Records to the streets with the debut CD, 4 Death, by the Humiside Soldiers (fronted by Kanine). He began 2001 by signing a new distribution deal for Lock Down Records with SELECT-O-HITS (Street Level), in Memphis, Tennessee. There's a saying that goes: "If you want something done right, do it your self." It was only fitting that O.C.A. release his third solo CD, TARGET PRACTICE. Oak Cliff Assassin still continued to hit the road with his hard work and with his "eye-catching" performances. For the third time the Observer recognized O.C.A. by nominating him for Best Rap/Hip Hop award, again.
To combine the attributes of a record label, production company, and management team, O.C.A. established in 2002, the Lock down Music. The label made its first internet only release, Countdown 2 Destruction by the C.B.P. & Strict-9. 1992: MURDER OR MUZIK?, the previously unreleased Oak Cliff Assassin CD containing his very first recordings, hit retail stores nationwide in December. 2003 kicked off with O.C.A. targeting the underground with a heavy club campaign. He chose 50 clubs in Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana; and, made a personalized theme song for each club and created the 2003 UNDERGROUND CLUB TOUR. After spending two years on road, Lock Down hit the streets again. Kanine was raw and uncut on his 2005 CD West Dallas Virus.
To advance even further on the business side in 2006, K.P. joined graphic designer LaNesha Lacey to form BIG PICTURES, a graphics and promotions company for independent artists and labels with small budgets. The compilation,
OAK CLIFF ASSASSIN & KANINE presents WE FROM DA' SAME CLICK, hit stores March 7th. Riding the buzz of the single and title track, "We From Da' Same Click" featuring Kanine, Mack Note, and Godfather, Oak Cliff Assassin has become a pioneer of the underground rap scene once again. With three new CD's, (SUPER CRUNK, SUPER SCREWED, DON'T GET YO FEELINGS HURT), you better watch out. O.C.A. has formed a strong, yet extensive, promotional network and fan base. Whether you call him K.P., O.C.A., or Oak Cliff Assassin, one thing is for sure, from the pre-production to the final mix, from the release date to the tour schedule, he is involved in every aspect of his projects.
"Now, watch him make history telling his story!"
