Hillkrunk is more than simply a band name. Hillkrunk is a way of life that comes from traditions as old as music itself. Steeped in the traditions of the blues, influenced by southern rap, crunk, soul and the niche of rock n roll that travel in collectives throughout the world, Hillkrunk are, in no uncertain terms, a family. The Hillkrunk family’s combination of rap music, soul and funk ties into hill country traditions and the legacy of blues masters that speak through them. These musical legacies are continually inspiring Hillkrunk and those that follow to evolve towards a higher state of musical consciousness and booty shakin. Unlike a traditional hip-hop act, Hillkrunk’s musical family performs with all original tracks – no samples here. The musical family’s core is comprised of lyricist Kaz, guitarists Wes Youngblood and Cody Dickinson (of North Mississippi All-Stars), drummer Hot Cleveland and harmonica virtuoso Dixie Dan (both of Hill Country Revue) joined by an ever-changing who’s-who of Memphis and North Mississippi musicians and rappers. Among the guests prominently featured on their debut album, listeners are treated to 8 Ball & MJG, Luther Dickinson, Al Kapone, Chris Chew, Maurice Eloise, Free Sol and Candace, DJ Soul Control, M3 and a special appearance from legendary producer and musician Jim Dickinson on the organ.
