ATOMS FAMILY BOMBIN'

While our recent (and sold out) Cannibal Ox Speakeroxxx/The Ox Below promo CD stirred up some emotions, the main point of this disc wasn't to sell the Vast Aire album, but to help spread the word that Cannibal Ox is NOT broken up, and are just doing solo projects (see Vordul's Young Havocs coming soon on Nature Sounds). As a matter of fact, Vast confirmed in an interview with HipHopSite that there are in fact TWO Cannibal Ox projects in the works. While nothing is solid, there has been an official announcement that a Cannibal OX EP will be released called Cypher Unknown, slated for a fall release....

Meanwhile, Cryptic One chimed in with a lot of news regarding the stable of Atoms Family artists (Hangar 18 (Alaska & Windnbreeze), Jestoneart, Cryptic One, paWL, DJ Cip One, and Cannibal Ox) ... Hangar 18 will release their long-awaited The Multiplatinum Debut Album on Def Jux in June.... Vast Aire and Carnage will team up as "Mighty Joseph", with their Empire State LP.... Jestoneart finished the "Dark City" LP, which Cryptic calls his favorite crew LP since Cold Vein.... Not to mention reissues of both Atoms Family archives discs, the whole crew will come together for a collaborative LP, which will feature collaborative tracks from the entire crew..... But before everything, Cryptic One will release The Anti-Mobius Strip Theory early next month, which includes collabos with Aesop Rock, Blockhead, Hangar 18, and Blueprint. Look for that one on sale soon.....

JAY-Z

Jay-Z is dead. He was dramatically and symbolically gunned down at the end of his new video for "99 Problems," which he premiered yesterday to the New York press in an exclusive screening.

"Jay-Z is finished, that's what the video is all about," said Jay's spokeswoman Jana Fleishman. "He is now Shawn Carter."

Wearing a gray suit with a pastel tie, the Jiggaman dropped in at the Tribeca Screening Room in New York City Thursday night to introduce the video to the public. The crowd was limited to about 100 journalists, publicists and other industry insiders. The guest of honor gave a short introduction before rolling the video, and he would have stuck around to answer questions, but he had other places he had to be.

"I want to be here, but I've got a team in the playoffs," he joked, dismissing rumors that his absence at a recent party celebrating the Nets move to Brooklyn indicated a split from the team.

The black-and-white video, which co-stars long-time hip-hop producer Rick Rubin draped in a fur trench coat, donning a cowboy hat and hiding behind his trademark dark sunglasses, is the most stylistic Jay-Z video ever seen. Jay said he wanted the scenes in the video for ninth track on his retirement CD, The Black Album, to be representative of the streets and how life really is in the city.

"I want to take a picture, something dynamic," he said about planning the video. "I want to shoot art."

Ironically, now that he's accomplished just that, the general public probably won't get to see the uncut video, which in addition to Jay's own graphic slaughter, features full frontal nudity in a prison scene. Jay said his artistic opus is being met with resistance from television executives because of its controversial content.

"Now I'm having trouble with BET and MTV," he said. "I feel like Madonna."

Retirement should give Carter plenty of time for Knicks games and other pleasant diversions, like his girlfriend Beyonce Knowles. British tabloids reported that the couple was married last weekend, but Fleishman denied it.

"The British tabloids always get it wrong," she said. "She was on tour on the west coast and he was watching basketball last weekend."

Jay-Z's 99 Problems video will hopefully begin to hit airwaves in the coming weeks.

Just one day after being released from prison, Suge Knight's release has already sparked some controversy, in the form of a message delivered to Knight from former Death Row Records artist, Daz Dillinger.

"You f*ggot ass n*gga finally you get outta jail," Daz said on an audio statement posted on his website, DPGRecordz.com. "They stuffed your b*tch ass up already up in jail n*gga. You know when you get out here n*gga in these streets some vicious stuff gonna happen. We gonna kill your big fat ass."

Over a well produced track, Daz stated that any rapper that recorded or worked with Suge Knight would feel his wrath.

He also had an ominous message for new Aftermath Entertainment artist Game, who is from Knight's hometown of Compton, California.

"What I think he gonna do is get at the n*gga Game, cause he's from Compton," Daz said. "Game Get your pistol. F*ggot ass n*gga, welcome home."

Daz recently revealed that the differences between him and Nate Dogg have been pushed aside and the two recorded "The Road We Travel," which will be featured on Daz' upcoming So So Def release, So So Gangsta.

In addition to touring with Snoop, he will drop a CD for producers titled Samplin 2 Da Beat Of Da Drum, a new DPG mixtape and a gospel album featuring his mother

Turk A Flight Risk?

New Orleans-based rap artist, Turk (formerly of Cash Money and Hot Boys fame, AKA Tab Virgil) has been determined a flight risk by the Federal Court in Memphis, Tennessee, on the eve of the release of his third solo album, Penitentiary Chances on KOCH Records on April 27...

Upon the eminent release of the album, the rapper is being held on charges of second-degree attempted murder of a Memphis Deputy Sheriff. The federal decision to keep Turk in custody still leaves Turk behind bars, where he is being held in maximum security. The album’s title comes from a song that was on his debut album, Raw And Uncut.

KOCH Records General Manager & Executive Vice President Alan Grunblatt states, “We were hoping to have Turk out of prison to help promote his album but alas we’ll have to market it on our own. Penitentiary Chances is his best album yet and we’re sure Hot Boys fans everywhere will love it.”

Turk has been receiving support throughout the hip hop community. Lafayette, Louisiana radio station DJ, Vinnie V, from KRRQ in Shreveport recently said “Keep Ya Head Up” to the imprisoned rapper on the air. Well wishes to Turk were also given on the air from Baton Rouge radio personality Wild Wayne from WQUE, who added that he had known Turk for a long time, and that the allegations in court against the rapper totally conflict with everything that he personally knows about Turk. Others who have publicly offered support to Turk on the airwaves have included BayBay at Shreveport’s KBTT and Kay Montgomery at WJWZ. Tina Tilton, formerly of Hot 107.1, at WLRM in Memphis, sent a letter to Turk in prison, saying she now has a hip hop ministry, and she wanted to encourage him. Although the prison refused to let him receive them, Turk has been sent packages from major hip hop publications. Fans have also written to his legal defense fund.

Turk maintains his innocence in the case. A second charge against the rapper was dropped when early ballistics tests showed that a second officer was shot by another police officer that was present at the scene.

A legal defense fund has been set up to pay legal fees for the 23-year old rapper. For those who wish to make donations, checks are payable to the Tab “Turk” Virgil Legal Defense fund, and may be sent in care of Da King And I Management LLC, PO Box 73131, Baton Rouge, LA 70874-3131.

Judge Declares Mistrial For Beanie Sigel

A mistrial was declared today in the case of Roc-A-Fella rapper Beanie Sigel. The jury deliberated for a week but was unable to reach a verdict on any of the charges against him. Sigel was facing 20 to 40 years in prison if convicted of shooting a man outside of a bar in 2003.

Terrance Speller claimed that Sigel shot him in the abdomen and foot, however the defense questioned Speller's credibility, and Speller admitted to changing his story several times when speaking to authorities.

In a separate case, Sigel still faces prison time after pleading guilty to federal drug and weapons charges related to a 2002 traffic stop when authorities said Sigel ditched his SUV and a loaded handgun and ran from the police. Investigators said they found drugs in the vehicle, including codeine, Oxycodone and marijuana. He is also awaiting trial on charges that he fractured a 53-year-old man's eye socket.

Rakim was arrested Tuesday night prior to a concert with Ghostface and Talib Kweli, on a warrant related to a failure to appear in court three years ago. The warrant was related to child support payments. Rakim was freed after appearing in court with proper documentation.
