Former Cash Money Artist Magnolia Shorty Gunned Down In New Orleans
Famed New Orleans rapper Magnolia Shorty, 28, was gunned down in an apparent double homicide Monday. The femcee and another victim were shot multiple times.
The former Cash Money Records artist, whose real name was Renetta Lowe, was found dead in her native New Orleans when the vehicle she was a passenger in crashed into the gates of an apartment complex on the eastern side of the city. She had been shot 26 times.
The shooting occurred about 12:30 PM in the 6300 block of Bridgehampton Drive.
Police have yet to name any suspects in the shooting that left a spattering of bullet holes in the neighborhood. They also have not reported a motive for the killing.
Lowe was given her rap name by late rapper Magnolia Slim, who also grew up in New Orleans’ notorious Magnolia Housing Projects. She ultimately signed by Brian “Baby/Birdman” Williams to the Cash Money Records label, making her the second female artist to score a contract with the company.
Months before her death, Magnolia Shorty was a featured artist at the SXSW Festival in Austin, Texas.
“I wanted to be a rapper. I’ve been rapping since I was 12 years old,” she told Spinner.com. “I was working on mix tapes and my verse while rapping at block parties. I eventually got introduced to Cash Money Records and we just went from there.”
In the hours following her death, more than 11,000 people joined an online Facebook memorial page mourning the slain lyricist.
