Shooting At Boston Studio

Four men in their 20's was shot to death in a Boston rap-studio Tuesday night. Police is now looking for a man seen running from the scene. The four killings is the first multiple homocide case in Bostin since 1991. Police think the shooting was planned. More info later on.

Ed Lover pleaded not guilty to two counts of assault and second-degree harassment in Manhattan Supreme Court on Thursday (Dec. 15) and was released on $1,000 bail, stemming from an incident at a New York night club last Sun. (Dec. 12).

Prosecutors allege that Ed Lover, former host of Yo! MTV Raps! and current radio personality on New York’s Power 105.1 was at Club Duvet with a group of friends when Leticia Belford, 26, bumped into a female in Ed Lover’s entourage.

A fight ensued between the two women and when the club’s bouncers intervened Ed Lover allegedly bypassed security and struck Belford in the face.

As a result of the alleged altercation, Leticia Belford, 26, suffered a mild concussion and a gash on her face that required 20 stitches.

The 42-year-old radio host, born James Roberts, turned himself over to authorities voluntarily on Thursday with his attorney, Michael Berger.

Ed Lover has denied any wrong doing and is due in court on March 23 to face two counts of third-degree assault, one count of attempted assault and one count of second-degree harassment

DMX Leaves Def Jam

DMX, who is currently serving a 70-day jail sentence for driving with a suspended license, has left his longtime recording home of Def Jam and is headed for a new ground...

According to MTV News, once the Yonkers native is released from jail, he is Sony Music bound, where he has reportedly signed a deal.

DMX has cut all ties with Def Jam after hinting earlier this year that Jay-Z's new position at the label has put a strain on their relationship.

The rapper was previously signed with Columbia (which is now part of Sony Music) back in the early '90s, but after recording for the label, his music never saw the light of day.

X has released five #1 albums for Def Jam including his quadruple platinum debut, It's Dark and Hell is Hot, in 1998. The rapper had stated in the past his frustration with Def Jam and was supposedly retiring after his last album, The Grand Champ was released, but it seems he has had a change of heart.

The rapper's new Def Jam album, Here We Go Now, was scheduled for release earlier this year, but has since been put on indefinite hold.

Eminem and Dr. Dre Music Used to Torture Detainees in secret Prison

NewsThe human-rights advocacy group Human Rights Watch have made allegations that the United States operated a secret prison near Afghanistan's capital Kabul in which detainees were kept in dark cells and tormented with loud music, which included tracks by Dr. Dre and Eminem.

According to a report posted on the groups website on Monday, one Ethiopian-born detainee claims he was kept in a pitch-black prison cell in the facility and was forced to listen to hip-hop and heavy metal music for 20 days straight at which point the music was replaced by "horrible ghost laughter and Halloween sounds."

Sadat X of Brand Nubian was arrested in Harlem, New York on gun charges Thursday (Dec. 22).

According to police, the incident started when Sadat X, born Derek Murphy, flashed a pistol at a group of teens in Harlem on 158th and Broadway.

Police said the rapper brandished a 40-caliber Beretta handgun and told the group of teens he was looking for a man with braids. He also allegedly threatened to “kill everybody.”

When authorities responded to a call about the incident, the group of teens pointed out Sadat X, who was still on the street with his gun.

Officers said they attempted to arrest the rapper, but the former 6th grade teacher allegedly fled on foot and was quickly apprehended and arrested.

Sadat X was charged with criminal possession of a weapon, reckless endangerment and resisting arrest.

The rapper is a member of the critically acclaimed group Brand Nubian, which scored several hits over the years including “Wake Up,” “Punks Jump Up To Get Beat Down” and “Don’t Let it Go To Your Head.”

Last month, Sadat X told AllHipHop.com that he was on sabbatical from teaching to focus on music and touring.

His latest album Experience and Education is in stores now.

Beanie Sigel is scheduled to kick the year off by heading back to court-this time for allegedly beating up 53-year-old Philadelphia man...

The misdemeanor assault case stems from an incident in which Beans allegedly got into a verbal altercation with Wendell Mathis. According to reports, Beans called a woman Mathis was talking to a "ho." A physical confrontation ensued and Mathis ended up with a broken eye socket.

Considering Beanie's rap sheet, which includes a federal gun possession charge and a weed-selling charge, the assault case could land the emcee behind bars for a year.

Beanie was acquitted of an attempted murder charge this past September. Months later, he was jailed until he paid $26,000 in child support and $2,000 in fines. The assault case is the last in a series of court cases Beans has undergone in the past few years.

Meanwhile, Kevin Green, the man accused of killing Beans' stepfather, Sam Derry, is scheduled for a January preliminary hearing to determine whether there's enough evidence to take thee case to trial. Green is accused of shooting Derry and setting his body on fire.

NBA Legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Working On Documentary About Jazz, Hip Hop, Basketball
Author: SoundSlam
Dec. 29, 2005 - New York, NY

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is the NBA’s all-time leading scorer, current assistant coach for the Los Angeles Lakers, and acclaimed as one of the greatest basketball stars to grace this country’s historical hoops landscape. A new endeavor by the tall, slender NBA legend, however, will use film footage to cover the topic of music’s relationship with basketball players.

Abdul-Jabbar is creating a documentary to explore how jazz and hip hop relate to basketball in light of the music’s social peak. Kareem, a native of Harlem and an adolescent during an extremely crucial, innovative era for jazz music, believes that a common thread can be found between the music of his day and the contemporary sonic backdrop to today’s generation of athletes.

Archived footage, such as interviews and musical interludes, might be part of the yet unnamed documentary, which is still in its formative production stages. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar stated, “We want to show how hip-hop, which kind of fuels today’s basketball stars, is directly related to jazz. When we show that connection we find that things haven’t changed at all.” Jazz music has undoubtedly played a monumental role in the transition of popular music and influence of hip hop despite a heavy generational gap.

Reminiscing on the early days of the professional hoops game, Abdul-Jabbar cites, “One of the professional teams that was considered to be the best team played out of Harlem. They played out of the Renaissance Ballroom and Casino, which was a dance hall and a place where prominent jazz musicians played. The Renaissance team would play before the main attraction when they played their home games.” Continuing, the 19-time NBA All-Star said, “They would play one half of the game, then they would have one minor band, then they would play the second half of the game and then they might have Duke Ellington until 3AM.”

Kareem is also actively involved with the Thelonious Monk Institute’s “Jazz Sports” program to help fuel the passion and development of today’s young jazz musicians. As Chairman of this program, Abdul-Jabbar is helping to pass on the tradition of both jazz and basketball. The institute also harbors a “BeBop to Hip-Hop” program to hone in on the innovative and experimental similarities between the musical movements.

There is no date currently set for release of the documentary. Stay tuned to SoundSlam for future updates.
