Aasim: "I'mma put Bad Boy on my shoulders and take it back to 94, 95..."
Aasim
After invading mixtapes, Aasim was personally recruited by P. Diddy a month ago and christened Bad Boy's savior. In this exclusive SOHH.com article, Aasim speaks on being discovered and taking Bad Boy back to greatness.
While Aasim might be new to most heads, the Queens rapper has been putting in work for years. After a failed deal with Loud Records, the upstart linked up with LV, Fat Joe's DJ. Yet, instead of joining the Terror Squad, Aasim opted to build his own squadron.
"We were examining that route. But with Terror Squad, I would have been under Joe. I wanted to be a leader and eventually put my own people on," Aasim told SOHH.com via phone. "Me and Pun was close when he was alive and we talked about it. It never materialized because of the production deal. He was basically saying we don't need these ni99as."
Like so many other emcees before him, Aasim's mixtape grind garnered him a buzz strong enough for labels, including Bad Boy and Def Jam, to take notice. However, while A&R's have done the recruiting for Bad Boy in recent years, the shiny suit man personally hand picked Aasim to restore Bad Boy's luster.
"He [Diddy] was looking for me cause he heard me on Absolute' mix show. He was scouting, trying to build Bad Boy back up and was looking for the next New York emcee," Aasim revealed. "When I spoke to him he said he picked me because something stood out that he couldn't see in other people. It all happened quick -- within like three months. He was serious and really wanted to do the deal. I'm the lead off ni99a. I'm a put Bad Boy on my shoulders and take it back to 94, 95. "
In Vibe Magazine's August issue, a former Bad Boy executive was quoted as saying, "[Bad Boy] was like [Puffy's] child. And now, basically, he's being a neglectful father. He only takes care of it when he has the time." Here, Aasim says Puffy intends to be more involved in his upcoming project.
"I've seen him about 4, 5 times. We had a meeting, been to a few parties with him. He wanna start being around more, so we can vibe," the Queens rapper shared. "He wanna be more hands on with the sh!t. That's what he said, we'll see if it happens."
In recent years, stars like Ludacris and T.I have passed on the chance to sign with Bad Boy. In addition, acts like Faith Evans and 112 have left the label. Despite this, Aasim said he didn't have reservations about signing with Bad Boy.
"I did feel that way about the game." But when I saw the excitement... just cause he don't hold the title now doesn't mean I can't be that ni99a that's gonna do it. I think it was his reputation that made people not f#@$ with Puff. But I think we can make hits together. "
Aasim's debut is scheduled to be release through Bad Boy records in 2005.
