Mystikal was sentenced to a year in prison for tax violations yesterday (Jan. 12). U.S. District Judge James Brady sentenced the rapper for failing to report $824,916 in earnings in 1998 and $930,953 that was earned in 1999. He must pay back taxes in the amount of $271,000 in addition to penalties and fines. Mystikal will serve the one-year sentence concurrently with a state sentence for sexual battery against his former hairstylist. The rapper pleaded guilty in 2004 of forcing a woman to perform oral sex after he allegedly caught her writing $80,000 in checks. He was sentenced to six years in prison. On Jan. 19, the rapper has a parole hearing at the Elayn Hunt Correctional Facility in St. Gabriel, Louisiana, where he is currently incarcerated.

HARRISBURG, Pa. - Gov. Ed Rendell on Tuesday signed an execution warrant for a man convicted of killing a Philadelphia police officer during a botched 1996 bank robbery.
Christopher Roney, 36, of Philadelphia, an inmate at Greene state prison, was scheduled for a lethal injection March 9.
Roney was convicted of pulling the trigger in the death of Lauretha Vaird, a nine-year police veteran who was responding to a silent alarm tripped during the Jan. 2, 1996, attempted robbery in Northeast Philadelphia.
At the time, Roney was known as the rap singer "Cool C." Two accomplices were sentenced to life in prison.
Vaird, a 43-year-old mother of two, was shot in the chest just after she walked in the door of the PNC Bank branch. She was the first female officer slain in the line of duty in city history.
Rendell has signed 47 death warrants since taking office in 2003.
The three people executed in Pennsylvania since the death penalty was reinstated in 1978 all ended their appeals voluntarily. As of Jan. 4, 224 men and five women were on the state's death row, according to the state Department of Corrections.

Last week we had the chance to hear some fire from a couple of albums that are dropping soon: Remy Ma's There's Something About Remy: Based on a True Story and Mobb Deep's Blood Money...

Rem has definitely established that she's more than just a spitter. She really can make records, and Fat Joe (the album's executive producer) should be smiling ear to ear right now. Ne-Yo, Ivy Queen and Keyshia Cole all appear.

Mobb Deep's LP is a Mobb LP, meaning that all the people who feared that the group was going to drastically switch up its style because it signed to G-Unit can stop worrying. Havoc and Prodigy are giving you the vintage talk over some ill production. There's a record called "Pearly Gates" with 50 Cent that's both dope and controversial, with the three MCs talking about going to heaven. And P is spitting as hard as he was in the Hell on Earth and H.N.I.C. days on one song that has him rhyming about his name. Lunacy!

The Mobb say they have a mixtape coming out soon, and if you've been listening to the underground circuit, you know there's been some jabs both blatant and subliminal being thrown by the Mobb and at the Mobb. We went through the laundry list and asked them about each one.

On the possibility of being involved in 50 Cent's beefs:

Prodigy: "We don't give a f---. We do us, Mobb Deep. We don't care about nobody else really."

Havoc: "We're here to make that music. If people want to hate and involve us, it's whatever. But at the end of the day, we're here to make that music."

On being called out by the Game:

Havoc: "I never worked with Game. I gave Game a track. I don't know nothing about him other than what I see him doing with all the off-the-wall remarks. He don't know me. Everything coming out of his mouth talking about me is false. He never met me a day in his life."

On their one-time good friend and collaborator, Nas:

Prodigy: "Basically, like I said, we don't give a f--- about nobody else. What happened in the past is the past."

Havoc: "We don't have no communication."

On stirring things back up with Jay-Z:

Prodigy: "I take my shots and, whatever, [Jay] takes his shots. What is he gonna do?"

Havoc: "Basically we're here to do this music. Rap is competition. Hopefully it's all done tastefully. And we're here to make good records at the end of the day. When you hear that album, that's all you're gonna think about." ...

"Sometimes you need to go to your brothers and you vent with them, and they vent with you and they tell you where they feel you should be at. I'm always gonna be a good listener," Raekwon said last week about his relationship with Busta Rhymes. Busta is the co-executive producer of Rae's upcoming Only Built for Cuban Linx 2 LP.

"To make a long story short, he's there out of being a good friend," the Chef continued. "Our whole train of thought was started like that. It wasn't started on the fact I need Busta or Busta needed Raekwon. Busta and Rae just get down like that. He came over and gave me food for thought. It's not just business."

Busta raps on Rae's new "State of Grace" remix, which just hit mixtapes.

"RZA made the beat," Raekwon explained. "It was a vintage beat out of RZA's catalog. I made [the original version]. It was dope. Busta wasn't there when I made the record, but when he heard it, he was like 'Yeah, fam. That's how you do it. That's what I need to see.'

"That was just fun, that's small stuff on what I'm doing now," Raekwon said, comparing mixtape tracks like "No Joke" and "State of Grace" to the songs on his upcoming album. "A lot of them songs you hearing is just me giving y'all egg rolls, shrimp rolls. The entrée is coming."

Rae just released The Vatican his first mixtape to hit streets in a long time,.

"The Vatican CD is basically from back then to now," he added. "Rae's all over it. If you really know what the Vatican is, it's a secret society, a conglomerate of dudes that I feel play a part in my career. Busta is part of the Vatican. Certain dudes is part of the Vatican only because they've been around my circuit and I've been around their circuit. I didn't want no DJs talking on [the mixtape]. I wanted it to be a CD you can just throw in and say, 'Can I still mess with Rae?' People have to start recognizing I'm still here. We made the CD to let everyone know, 'Get ready. Taste this.' " ...

Before DMX announced his deal with Sony Music, there was talk that he might go to G-Unit. The Dog says the rumors were unfounded and false.

"I'm cool with 50, but the most we discussed was doing a project called The Best of Both Hoods, or something like what Jay-Z and R. Kelly did [with The Best of Both Worlds]. I was still signed [to Def Jam] at the time, but I wasn't going [to G-Unit]. I couldn't do that." ...

Finally, there are some really interesting mixtapes out there this week. Saigon teams up with DJ Drama for a tape, and raps some brow-raising lines about Biggie. And Postaboy put out a new disc with a bunch of material he recorded before he was diagnosed with cancer.

Fresh out of tail, rapper Gucci Mane is ready to get back in the game...

The rapper was released from Georgia's Fulton County Jail on Monday [January 16] after serving time on assault charges, which were dropped due to lack of evidence.

Out from behind bars, Mane is pushing his way back onto the scene with his new single, "Go Head," off his Trap House album. He is also planning a nationwide promotional tour behind the album, which he was unable to fully promote due to his incarceration.

"Although we were unable to fully execute the anticipated promotional and marketing efforts, we are pleased with the moderate success of Trap House thus far, in light of the circumstances, " Big Cat Records CEO/President, Melvin "Mel Man" Breeden said in a statement.

"Big Cat Records and Gucci's fans made the decision to stand by him from the beginning and we are thankful that his troubles are behind him and now he can really get down to the business of working this record," Breeden added.

After founding The Source over 18 years ago, David Mays and longtime president/artist Raymond "Benzino" Scott have been sent packing by the magazine's new board of directors..

As SOHH.com previously reported, the duo went to court last week to obtain a temporary restraining order to prevent being ousted by the board.

According to the New York Post, that order has now been lifted and a majority of board members have voted to fire Mays and Scott. They have been replaced by former Source chief operating officer Jeremy Miller, who will now serve as the new chief executive.

Miller, who resigned from his position as chief operating officer at The Source in 2004, worked at the magazine for 14 years before leaving to start his own publication Down, which was dedicated to Southern hip-hop and culture. Four out of six members of the board agreed that it was in the magazine's best interest to replace Mays and Scott with Miller.

In the last year and a half, The Source has been plagued with problems, ranging from defaulting on an $18 million loan to a prominent sexual harassment lawsuit filed by fomer employees Kim Osorio and Michelle Joyce.

Free X-Raided Campaign

After years of daily emails and inquiries from fans asking how they can help X, where they can send money, how they can show their support to him, we are finally giving his fans and supporters a way to do it, via the Free X-Raided campaign...

We are going to be putting out a series of "Free X" CDs/DVDs, in which various artists are donating songs showing their support for Raided. We have studios donating studio time or mastering services; we have magazines donatine ad space for the campaign, we have radio stations donating free airtime for 30 second commercials about the campaign... the love we've received has been phenomenal. We will be printing up the Free X-Raided T-Shirts, posters, flyers, etc, as well.

X-Raided, himself, is not involved in this campaign. He's not the type to ask for help, he just does what he needs to do to help himself, which is how he's been able to release 9 cd's and run a record label (Bloc*Star Entertainment) from behind prison walls. A feat unaccomplished by anyone else. His bloc homie, Big No Love, has been the fuel behind the campaign, driven by a force of loyalty and respect that few others ever encounter today. 100% of the profits made from the Free X campaign will go towards Anerae Brown's defense fund for his appeal.

My point in writing you is that we want to find out who is willing to ride for the cause; who is willing to put their voice into action and become a part of the movement. Each of us have our own particular ways that we can be of benefit, and I'd like you all to know that we embrace your support and we are ready to utilize it.

It's been wonderful to see Northern California's hip-hop culture come together and unite for the cause unlike any other time I can remember, but we hope to unite the WEST COAST as a whole, and involve the rest of the country, as well.

You can respond to me, X-Raided's wife, directly, or you can contact Big No Love at: http://www.myspace.com/bignolove

Thanks in advance for your support.

Warmest respect,

Elayne Brown

Jay-Z, Nas Talk Signing, Jay-Z Comments On Cam's Dis

Jay-Z and Nas spoke to the USATODAY about the recent news that Nas had signed with Def Jam, the label his one-time rival Jay-Z, now presides over.

In an article published today (Jan. 25), Jay-Z said his feud with Nas ended after the two met at the urging of Jive Records executive Mark Pitts, who was the former manager of Notorious B.I.G. and Nas' current manager.

"Everybody talks about Big and Pac and how that ended," Jay-Z told the USA Today. "We talked about showing a different side and what it would mean to the culture of hip-hop. It was bigger than just us and our trivial little beefs. Hopefully, it shows another way."

Nas said Def Jam was a more hip-hop oriented label that will allow him to explore new ways of expressing his creativity.

"I wake up every day in a new world that new children are growing up in," Nas said "Growing up in the '80s and '90s, it was one way, and now it's a whole new world with the things that these kids listen to or watch on TV."

Jay-Z also spoke to MTV News about Cam'ron's recent dis track "Gotta Love It."

Cam'ron released the seven minute song last week, which among other things, accuses Jay-Z of stealing Roc-A-Fella, Roc-A-Wear and Kanye West from former partner Damon Dash.

"My thing is, it's such an obvious ploy for attention and to get people to talk about it and for [Cam to] sell albums," Jay-Z told MTV News "I'm torn...I feel like I would be stupid to even pay that any attention, because it's such a ploy. N**gas is holding press conferences behind [the dis record]...That's not even a good dis record. That s**t is trash. I'm torn. We'll see what happens. Maybe on my time we'll deal with it, but I'm not really pressed. I'm inspired by good artistic s**t. Cam's s**t is not artistic. There's nothing good about it. Everything about it is an obvious ploy to get attention. Nobody wants to get used."

Slip-N-Slide Allowed To Release Pitbull CD

A United States District Court Magistrate Judge recently granted a preliminary injunction to Slip-N-Slide Records that prohibits TVT Records from interfering with the distribution and/or release of Pitbull's Welcome to the 305.

The two labels were embroiled in a legal battle over the release of Welcome to the 305, an album that contains material Pitbull recorded before signing with TVT.

In March 2005, TVT sent a letter to Slip-N-Slides distributors indicating that the sale of 305 violated TVT's rights and that TVT would seek redress for violation of those rights.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Stephen Brown ruled that "TVT's statement and letter that Slip-N-Slide's actions in promoting and distributing 305, were a violation's of TVT's rights (under a contract with Pitbull), was a misrepresentation which was made with knowledge and was clearly intended to cause the recipients of the letters to not purchase 305."

The Court further found that "Slip-N-Slide's business relationships with it's distributors had been damaged by the TVT letter.

Although Slip-N-Slide had already received 100,000 pre-orders of 305, they were unable to release the album because virtually every distributor that received the letter refused to sell it."

The Slip-N-Slide recordings were tracked in 2001, before Pitbull signed to TVT.

Slip-N-Slide owner Ted Lucas claimed Pitbull signed over all rights to the recordings when they granted the rapper a release in 2003 to sign with TVT.

On the contrary, TVT President Steven Gottlieb said that Slip-N-Slide was exploiting the investment they had made to make Pitbull a worldwide star and that Pitbull told TVT to block the release.
