K'Naan
K'Naan has a more interesting story than most MC's. He was born in Somalia, a country which was very tumultuous at the time (and really still is). He eventually was able to get out of the country after which he landed in New York City where his father had already lived for several years. Shortly after they all packed up and headed to Toronto.
As for his music it demonstrates his history. Strewn throughout it are obvious African influences in everything from the production to his lyrical content. It leads to a very original and interesting sound and style. He has been on tour with artists like Mos Def and Talib Kweli and draws comparisons to artists like that due to his lyrical content. Obviously he is still quite different because of the African influence, but it's a good way to get an idea of what he's about.
His 2005 debut The Dusty Foot Philosopher shows all this. The album was critically acclaimed and won a Juno (the Canadian Grammys) for best Rap Recording of the Year.
