ATCQ's Ali Signs Chip-Fu & Preps Solo LP
Friday - August 13, 2004
by Carl Chery

Shortly after inking a worldwide deal for his Garden Seeker Productions, Ali Shaheed Muhammad has announced the signings of former Fu-Schnickens member Chip-Fu and shed the dim light on A Tribe Called Quest's future.

Wasting no time, Shaheed is currently collaborating with a bevy of musicians on his imprint's first release, Shaheedullah & Stereotypes, which is slated to drop in October.

"Arthur Mann and Neil Levine are respected icons within the music business," Ali said in a statement. "I am inspired by what they have achieved and am eager to learn from their experiences. My Garden Seeker Productions family and I are ecstatic about the new partnership. We plan to turn the heat up with Penalty by our side. Lookout. 'Elevated Orange,' baby."

Despite his own project, Shaheed has added veteran Chip-Fu of the early '90s rapid-fire trio and newcomers Kay and Sy Smith to his label's roster.

"He's hot. He's fire. I produced songs on the Fu-Schnickens record. For me to be around Chip, it's just natural," Shaheed told SOHH.com via phone. "He's a very talented artist walking the streets. He was looking for a home and I saw his vision."

While Tribe has announced their reunion over a year ago, heads have yet to hear new material from the group. Now word is that Kaamal aka Q-Tip is prepping a new solo album and Shaheed is now working on his label.

"It's always a question mark, nothing certain. Kaamal already said in statements there's nothing more for Tribe to be established. There's nothing more that can be shed in that regard," Ali revealed. "We're doing a show in San Diego for the first time in 6 years. But there are no recordings, nothing new."

Shaheedullah & Stereotypes hits stores in October

1.Common Cooking Up Some Heat

After an electrifying performance with Kanye West on Chappelle's Show a couple of months ago, heads began buzzing about Common's new single, "The Food" and upcoming release, Be. The buzz then intensified when rumors started spreading that Com's next LP was to be released through Kanye West's Very Good Music imprint. Though the album was initially slated to be released in June, it has since been pushed back. Now, word is that the album is destined to be a banger with Kanye and Jay Dee reportedly handling the bulk of the production. Sources say the LP captures Com in Resurrection form.

2. Peedi Crakk Buzzes

Since being released from prison earlier this summer, Peedi Crakk has wasted no time flooding mixtapes with a wide selection of freestyles and original songs. In an interview conducted by SOHH.com this past June, Crakk shared, "[Damon Dash] is like 'Crakk, you the next ni99a so I gotta get you right." And that's exactly what he's been doing. His recent collaborations with Beanie Sigel have added to his current buzz and now the streets are slowly but surely demanding for Peedi's solo debut.

3. Nas Hooks Up With Jill Scott

Nas is scheduled to appear on Jill Scott's sophomore album. In the cover story of The Source magazine's September issue, God's son revealed that DJ Premier called him to appear on a track he was working on for Scott's album. The article also reported that Nas' last Columbia LP is slated to be entirely produced by DJ Premier.

4. Pharrell Williams Gives Advice

Word is that Pharrell Williams is advising Alesha, from the U.K.'s female pop group Ms-Teeq to start rhyming. The singer reportedly starred in N.E.R.D.'s "She Wants To Move" video. Despite being shy, Alesha finally rhymed for Pharrell after he began beatboxing. At the end of the cipher, Williams told the singer she was talented and advised her to buy a Slick Rick album to learn how to master her English accent.

A few years ago it seemed like G. Dep would be Harlem shaking his way to the top of the charts after he, P. Diddy and Black Rob dropped "Let's Get It." The video was on fire, the song was thorough, so why do we have to jog your memory when mentioning the featured performer on this week's mixtape? Well, that's because Dep wasn't able to piggyback off the success of that record. His 2001 Child of the Ghetto LP was bootlegged several months before its release, and despite critical praise, he couldn't move many units. Adding to his troubles, Dep unwisely aired some dirty laundry when he discussed his drug problems with a couple of publications. Despite not being on Bad Boy anymore, the Deputy seems to be back on track with this mixtape. He's even advertising his new LP, called Ghetto Legend.

Joints To Check For:
"Remember This." Dep yells out producer Tony Dofat and his former label on the record. The bass rumbles almost instantly, and G. lets his seamless flow go. "Put it on your list/ If you don't remember nothing, remember this," he advises of those who have slept on him.

"We Don't Believe You" featuring Black Rob and Ice Shuler. Hey, here's another nice blast from the past, Dep's longtime friend Black Rob. Rob's health and legal problems have kept him from hitting up the mic consistently the past few years, but here he still has enough fire to make you say "whoa!"

"Dep's Threat." Dep sounds like he's a kid again freestyling at the lunchroom table, trying to prove he's the nicest one in school with his words, while using the instrumental from R. Kelly's "A Woman's Threat" as an accomplice. His only misstep is that he confuses his movies, claiming to be a " 'Top Gun' like Lou Gossett [Jr.]," when in fact we all know that sweet Lou played flyboy Charles "Chappy" Sinclair in the "Iron Eagle" series.

Bang 'Em Smurf Sentenced To 3 1/2 Years

Former G-Unit member Bang ‘Em Smurf is behind bars, jailed on charges from the incident that he claims sparked his feud with 50 Cent.

Smurf is serving a 3 ½ year term due to gun charges that stemmed from a neighborhood beef that resulted in a shootout.

“I was in my hood one day - that's when 50 had kicked us off the road [from touring],” Smurf revealed to AllHipHop.com. “That's when I first started working with Domination. I had a mixtape with Domination, and I'm on the block and my homie got a situation, and this dude he had a problem with knocked him out. Laid him flat out in front of me, and that's my dude. So we did what we did. Dudes we got in the conflict with kept it gutter. They got hit up, they didn't say nothing - they didn't go to no hospital in Queens. I respect their gangsta.”

It was around this time that Smurf alleges 50 Cent stopped communicating with him, resulting in a verbal feud between the two men.

The timing is bad for Smurf, who signed his GF Records to a deal with Koch and was preparing to release an album in September. That plan has been abandoned and Smurf said that his album will not hit stores until October.

“Me being in jail is going to help us out even more,” Smurf said optimistically. “That's what I think. And I get to see who my real [friends] are. DJ Domination is about his business - he's gonna grind. I'm real confident.”

Additionally, Smurf said that he would use his time behind bars wisely and would get his G.E.D.

“Three years, I ain't mad at that,” Smurf said. “I can do that. I can get my business mind [right] for real, for real now. Read some books, get my GED, take some other courses. People can write to me - it's all good, but they gotta wait til I get situated upstate. I'm still up here on the boat.”

Fans can keep up with Bang ‘Em Smurf during his incarceration, buy checking out their official sites, silverbackguerillaz.com and gfrecords.com.

There has been alot of talk about an incident from last week that concerned Jayo Felony. We just want to let you know that Jayo is doing good and to be on the look out for the new Riflemen album project, and his solo album "In Da Trenches" dropping this fall on Universal Records.

I have had the opportunity to listen to both the Riflemen and his solo album, and they are THE SHIT, without exagerating. Jayo Felony delivers and amazing performance on both records, two of my most anticiapted records of the year.

In other Riflemen news, 40 Glocc has been in the studio this week with RBX and Kokane working on his 2nd solo album, the follow up to his HIGHLY underrated debut The Jakal. We will put up pictures from the studio sessions tomorrow.

Miami-bred 23-year-old cuban rapper, Pitbull, is preparing for the release of his debut album, M.I.A.M.I. (Money Is A Major Issue). The album is a culturally diverse effort coming from one of the meanest dogs co-signed by Lil' Jon.

Pitbull's Lil' Jon-produced lead single "Culo," inspired from all the ladies' backs, has taken off and become an instant hit in many radio markets across the nation and gained heavy rotation on MTV.

According to the rapper, his album will live up to his rap moniker. "Pitbulls are outlawed in Dade County, so I'm the only Pitbull allowed there," says Pitbull. "I want my album to reflect my passion and drive to reach the top."

With Lil' Jon beats becoming more and more sought after, you can only expect greatness from M.I.A.M.I. (Money Is A Major Issue) as he serves as executive producer for the project. The album will include guest appearances from the King Of Crunk himself along with Crunk N'B singer Oobie.

Even though most artists in Miami are overlooked by the rest of the industry Pitbull plans to change the trend.

"Crunk really got started in Miami, with bass music," he said. "Crunk ain't nothin' but bass music slowed down. And bass music got started here in Miami. Even after all that success we still get slept on, but that's about to change."

Pitbull's debut is slated to hit stores on August 24 on TVT Records. But this is just one of many upcoming releases including Jacki-O's Poe Little Rich Girl on October 26, Teedra Moses' Complex Simplicity in store now and a new album from Lil Jon & The East Side Boyz in November.

There have been rumours circulating about the "Freak-A-Leek" Star Petey Pablo being in talks with Death Row Records.

He recently recorded songs with Kurupt, Jayo Felony, 40 Glocc amongst others and has been seen representing Death Row.

There is no official word on this yet, but we will soon be conducting an interview with Petey and will hopefully clear this up for you.

In other news, it seems as if Kurupt's Againgst The Grain might suffer from another delay... there is no new date.

Beanie Sigel's sending out a red alert for his new album. He says he's already got enough gems to deem the disc a classic, but since The B-Coming's release date has been pushed back, he wants to give a few of his favorite producers a chance to make the cut.

"Whoever wants to get on this project, you'd better have the illest sh--, 'cause I'm closing out," Beans said earlier this week. "We got a couple people like Kanye [West] trying to make it. I put a [call] out on RZA. I've never worked with RZA, but I know he can come with something dirty. I know [DJ] Premiere can come with something crazy."

The B-Coming as it stands now is a tight ship with just a few producers on the roster. DJ Scratch, Chad West, Aqua and Heavy D are among the ones who supplied beats. The only other MCs Sigel names as track accomplices are Busta Rhymes, Bun B, Redman, Twista and Peedi Crakk.

"I think I took him back to 'Rated "R," ' " Sigel said of working with Redman, referring to a track off Red's 1992 LP, Whut? Thee Album. "No concept, I wouldn't even want to do a concept song with Redman. That was somebody who I was fu--in' with before I started rapping. [On my new song,] I had the beat from Bink. I wasn't gonna use no hook, no nothing. I kept listening to it and thinking what else I was going to do. I gave them 48 bars straight. The song is called 'One Shot Deal.' I was gonna do the 48 and bring it back to the beginning, but I was like, 'Redman will sound crazy on this joint.' I sent it to him and it came back crazy."

Sigel's first single is "Got to Have It," featuring Peedi Crakk and Twista. Last year Sigel complained that the strict schedule of his house arrest was hindering his music-making process (see "Beanie Sigel Keeping It Regular While Recording Under House Arrest"). However, Sig has since built a home studio and credits his recording quarters as being the catalyst that put his album over the top.

"I could wake up six in the morning, go downstairs and record," he said. "I learned how to use ProTools and everything. Whenever I felt it, I could record. It's a classic album. If it ain't better than The Truth, it's right there with it. I wouldn't say it if I ain't think so, 'cause The Truth was my baby. That's the pure album. [During The B-Coming,] I was going through so much, so my mind was moving. I was just making joints."

Despite the distraction of his numerous legal problems (see "Beanie Sigel Buys Some More Time"), Sigel has managed to put out a mixtape with DJ Green Lantern called Public Enemy #1 as a precursor to his album, which is now due October 26.

A new article published in the "San Francisco Bay View" suggests both Tupac and Outlaw member Kadafi were victims of the Cointelpro.

The artilce continues on to also claim that the Notorious B.I.G. was used as a tool by the Government in order to make the beef between the East and West sides look "authentic" enough; then later was killed as well.

Check inside for the complete article....

In the spirit of our glorious Ancestors, we rebellious slaves, African and Colonized Warriors exercise our divine right to practice Black August Resistance. Previously, we rapped about the origins of Black August and the resistance put forth by those noble guerrilla comrades, kidnapped, tortured and held for ransom behind enemy lines.

It should be noted that before we ever knew a place like Abu Ghraib existed, we were fully aware of our freedom fighter comrades being terrorized and tortured in the cold, brutal concentration camps conveniently located in the constipated bowels of these very racist, capitalist United States. Our sisters and brothers are being held as political prisoners and prisoners of war, not for any crimes committed, but for their political beliefs, political work and organizational affiliations.

Now, to the masses who have been thoroughly indoctrinated and baptized in the deep sewage system of lies — brought to you by foolish, hopelessly devoted lost souls puppeteered by the ruling class — this may seem far fetched or foreign. Nevertheless, while you continue to be mentally raped and left with your mind screwed up, in the real world we are struggling unrelentingly for the total liberation of African and colonized people.

I want to get down to the business of Black August Resistance. What is Black August Resistance? According to the elders, it is “a fighting style best exemplified by the heroic African Freedom Fighters George L. Jackson, Jonathan P. Jackson and Jefferey Khatari Gaulden.” Black August Resistance is African and colonized people unifying and utilizing their power to oppose social oppression and economic exploitation.

For years, in celebration of the living concept of Black August, our families trapped behind the walls of the California concentration camps in particular and behind enemy lines in general have been handing out revolutionary ass kickings to the so-called “powers that be.” Certainly we do not want to break the tradition, because we realize, as our brother Chairman Fred Hampton Jr. says, “Black August 2004, we are at war.”

So of course it is only natural that we turn the heat up. If you will allow me, I’ll be the first to set it off by throwing a Molotov cocktail at counterinsurgency. As we lock and load, we set the scope, aiming at the arch-nemesis of my people — Cointelpro.

Orchestrated by the late sinister J. Edgar Hoover and carried out by the FBI, Cointelpro (counterintelligence program) was launched by this wicked establishment to destroy and leave Africans and colonized people totally devastated. During the ‘60s, the FBI, under the direction of the demented, bitter Mr. Hoover, through Cointelpro, assassinated the character, mental and physical bodies of organizations and individuals including SNCC (Student Non-violent Coordinating Committee), RNA (Republic of New Africa), RAM (Revolutionary Action Movement), the Black Panther Party, Malcolm X, Martin Luther King Jr. and countless other liberators.

Many people believed that during the ‘70s, after documents on Cointelpro were exposed, the counterinsurgency program ended. Nothing could be further from the truth.

As proof that Cointelpro is alive and well in recent years, you could examine the government orchestrated infamous “East-West rap beef” between New York rapper Notorious B.I.G. and California political thug rapper Tupac Shakur. Tupac, the son of two former Black Panthers, Afeni Shakur (Panther 21) and his stepfather Dr. Mutulu Shakur (currently a political prisoner), was assassinated due to his family background and political beliefs.

The Notorious B.I.G., who was later killed as well, being the most popular rap artist on the East Coast, was simply used as a tool to make the beef look authentic. It should be noted that shortly after the assassination of Tupac, his cousin Yafu Kadaffi was also assassinated. Kadaffi just so happened to be the son of another prominent movement figure, Sekou Odinga, who is also currently a political prisoner.

For a more recent glimpse of Cointelpro in full effect, take into account the re-framing of Aaron Patterson in Chicago just last week. Aaron Patterson, our warrior comrade, who was pardoned and unleashed after 18 years on death row for a double homicide he did not commit, was framed again on Thursday, Aug. 5, on what the state alleged were gun and drug charges.

We know the real reason is that since Aaron Patterson was unleashed, he has been a practitioner of the Harriet Tubman Code - Leave no man behind - and has organized support of the African Anti-Terrorism Bill. It should be further noted that while in prison, Aaron Patterson and other Black men were tortured to force confessions to crimes they did not commit.

Aaron had recently filed a lawsuit against former Chicago Police Commander Jon Burge, a ringleader in the House of Screams, where the victims had electroshocks placed to their testicles and were continuously tortured. Aaron is currently being held in Chicago without bail, and has a court date today, Aug. 11.

We will give you an update in the next Bay View. It’s a new day on the plantation, and it has to be, as Frantz Fanon put it, “the year of the boomerang.” Black August Resistance!

Cointelpro five main objectives

1. Prevent the coalition of militant Black Nationalist groups.
