Tupac once rapped that Rodney King inspired him to protect himself when police brutality loomed in his California neighborhood. Now the inspiration has decided to start rapping.Advertisement

In 1992, Rodney King’s brutal beating at the hands of Los Angeles police was captured on videotape and sparked the Los Angeles riots. He told television show “Celebrity Justice” that he is serious about taking his experience 12 years ago and putting it out as a rap record.

Rapping with no music, King recited some of his best lyrics like,“I hear you hatin’ while I'm prayin’ it don’t happen to you / I see you laughin’ like you got it, but you ain’t nothin’ but a fool. / I had my face broke, I been face down; I had to face tomorrow when I was gettin' clowned.”

After hearing his work, music executive Jeff Grabow believed in King’s vision for a rap career.

"He will sell a lot of CDs, that's not a doubt in my mind,” Grabow said. “If this album is a decent album and has a couple of good stars on it, this thing could be multi-platinum."

King said he hopes that he can get entertainers like Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige and Kanye West on board for his solo debut.

As an individual, King has all the makings and trappings of a great rapper, if one takes controversy into account.

Last year, he had to serve a year in drub rehab after his crashed his SUV and now is prohibited to drive. “I don’t really like driving no more, anyway,” he said shrugging off his probationary status.

And while he put a spotlight on police brutality, King said he has gotten an incredible amount of support from officers since his infamous beating. “I had one cop told me, 'Hey man, don't worry about nothing, I got your back Rod, I got your back no matter what.’”

But to King, a lot of things are the same since his 1992 incident that rocked Los Angeles and America.

He raps, “And to think it ain’t changed, still fightin’ the same war, still watching good boys try to be hard-core / Now ten years have passed and the fire just quit, the smoke just cleared and it’s the same old ****, the same head trip, man I'm sick of sayin’ it."

C.L. Smooth vs Pete Rock:

Allhiphop.com: Do you wish to comment on some of things that Pete Rock has been saying lately?

CL Smooth: If you’re not here to help, f*** you! Don’t act like I’m a cancer or a parasite. I’m not jealous of you! I would never be jealous of nobody with one car and one garage. I’m trying to get four cars and four garages! What is the matter with you? Come back home. I’m building houses where I sold crack at. So, don’t tell me that I haven’t changed into a better man. I’m not going to allow the negative s**t to display and take the forefront because it’s too hard to come back in the game after ten years and talk s**t to a n***a like me. I don’t even let them street n***as talk to me like that. The biggest record on Pete Rock’s album is from CL Smooth. I don’t have to make it up…ask my hood! I’m not the toughest n***a; I’m just more serious than the average man. It shows in my music, my discipline, and my enthusiasm. All of my enthusiasm is catered toward what I’m trying to build and what these n***as remember about CL and Pete Rock. I’m keeping that legacy alive. How are you going to do thirty shows with me and then tell me you don’t need me? Come on, you never had packed shows until you were with CL! You are fresh off the block, you’re getting all these shows and all this money, but you don’t need me? You need me. I’m telling you to come back home, but come home with a business mind and a plan. Kamikazes never had any plans but crash! The thing about me is I’m diplomatic because I know that overkill is overkill. A lot of times, a n***a is so scared he kills himself, man. I was just here to save that n***a, man because his spirit was broken. He stopped combing his hair and brushing his teeth, and I said to him, “Man, there’s a bigger light than that.” I told him to dust himself off and let’s get it. I just asked him to do his job. Do your job, Pete Rock! I didn’t ask him to be a superhero; I asked that n***a to make me a beat. How did you get to be you if you didn’t make CL any beats? Give me a beat, shut the f*** up, and stop trying to live my life for me. Give me the beat n***a, and let me go out here and please our public! I’m not the problem. The problem was getting your ass on that plane and displaying what you are truly gifted at. Why be a rapper when there’s no future in it for you? You are a wack ass rapper. Let’s be honest!

Allhiphop.com: He did an interview with us back in May, and he hinted that you could not make it on your own. Do you want to respond to that or not?

CL Smooth: That’s his opinion, and he could never say that to me personally. If that’s how Pete Rock lives his life, talking through the media, go ahead. I love you anyway. It takes a whole lot to be me, so I imagine it takes ten times more to be you. He knows me and his family knows me. They know how I get down. True indeed, I smack n***as heads off their shoulders! If you want to talk on the swings and talk s**t to your peers, that s**t doesn’t bother CL. It bothers CL when you lie and create a false image. Snoop Dogg said, “Come holla at me, homie, you know I love you.” How does Snoop love me and my n***a Pete don’t love me? How does Raekwon, Method Man, and the whole f***ing Wu-Tang Clan talk about how they really love me and Pete Rock don’t love me? I walked on blocks that Pete Rock can never walk on. Pete Rock, I love you baby. I’ve got nothing to be ashamed of. I got a good woman and a good life, so what should I be ashamed of? Pete Rock can’t ever disrespect me and not get his head smacked off. He can never say that to my face. I love him anyway. All I’m asking him to do is do the beats. The proof is there. CL Smooth is the biggest s**t on your project and you are a walking contradiction, man. We don’t have to sling no more mud. Make my beats, f****t! Stop playing games and throwing rocks at the dome. How are you going to say without you, I’m not going to make it? You got to say that about yourself. That’s kind of scary, because you are basically saying that I’m going to drown myself trying to drown this n***a. Pete Rock doesn’t have to talk to me. Make my beats though! I’ll cut you a check, you go in the studio, and make my f*cking beats, man. I don’t see anything else happening if you don’t facilitate CL Smooth.

Rumors have been circulating about Spider Loc, currently on the Death Row roster (although not officially signed to them), is close to inking a deal with none other than the ones controling mainstream at the moment, G Unit.

Spider Loc has recently worked with G Unit/Black Wall Street artist The Game, but other than that, there hasn't been much solid basis for the rumor.

Now there is...

On his official website, http://www.spiderloc.com/ Spider posts on his own forum, to let the fans know whats happening with him.

Here is what someone asked:

You gonna let us know what's up with you and the Aftermath camp?! I see you been lightly touchin' on some shit here & there in some of your posts but haven't really given us the full picture... You think you're gonna sign a hot deal soon or what? Let me know there's a SPI album or some new material droppin' so I can copp one! peace 1-L

Here is Spider's reply:

Yeah I'm gonna sign I didn't want to say too much until i wuz fa sho but i talked to fifty one mo time yesterday fa like four hours ova the phone he wuz in Italy and it wuz like six AM when we got off the phone and after that convo ya best believe its goin down fa sho.

Keep in mind that nothing is official at the moment, yet this situation seems likely to go through.

Little Brother Goes Major With Atlantic
By Nolan Strong
Date: 8/25/2004 11:57 pm

North Carolina Hip-Hop group Little Brother has officially inked a long term exclusive recording contract with Atlantic Records, via a production deal with ABB Records.

Little Brother, which consists of group members Phonte, Big Pooh and 9th Wonder, signed with ABB in 2002. In 2003 the label dropped their critically acclaimed full length debut, The Listening.

"Little Brother is the latest ABB artist to step up to the plate in terms of major label interest," ABB Records President Beni B said. "It's good to know that their musical vision, together with ABB's efforts, created a solid first impression. ABB looks forward to working with the great Atlantic team to help Little Brother further develop their incredible talent, grow their musical visions, and impact people's lives with their music."

Atlantic is building a formidable Hip-Hop roster under the watchful eye of Co-Chairman/COO Craig Kallman, who has overseen the signings of Chicago’s Bumpy Johnson, Juvenile and more recently, DJ Quik.

Kallman called Little Brother “one of the most creative and refreshing groups on the underground urban music scene.”

“With two gifted MCs and a genius producer, they tell down-to-earth, authentic stories laid over brilliant soundscapes,” Kallman said. “With their roots in the music of classic Native Tongues artists, Little Brother is taking hip-hop music into the future with an inspired musical vision and a truly organic chemistry. ABB has proved to be a terrific incubator of new talent, and I am thrilled that we were able to join forces with them to bring Little Brother into the Atlantic family.”

After a significant hiatus and personal trials, Silk The Shocker has made his return to hip-hop music with a number of endeavors as well.

The younger brother of Master P, Silk told BET.com that he was about to release Based on a True Story on September 7 and used his break from rap to refocus himself.

“Man, I’ve been doing the business side of it, taking time for myself. I’ve been doing this doing this for 10 years straight. Finally I said to myself I’m going to take myself a break, take a little breather get the business side of stuff learn the text learn about different little things like clothes, film,” he said.

Silk stated that he has a few unnamed movies on deck and a sitcom called “Landlords” that comes out in the fall.

But, as far as music is concerned, Silk stated that he was determined to make his moniker as popular as it was in the later part of the 90’s. “Its one of my best albums that I did yet,” Silk bragged.

Silk also offered an update on the status of his brother Corey “C-Murder” Miller, who currently faces life in jail for the murder of a 16-year-old teen.

“It is actually looking pretty good. They gave him a new trial, but then the DA tried to appeal it,” he said “They want to see him do some time. The system has been in place for a long time. A lot of people went to jail for something they didn’t do.”

MIAMI — Now that everyone from clubgoers to little kids to the old man driving beside him on the highway on Monday have leaned back to the sounds of Fat Joe and the Terror Squad, the Bronx MC is looking forward. He's just about wrapped up production on his next solo album, Things of That Nature, due November 16.

"The momentum is phenomenal right now," Joe said Monday night at DJ Khaled's Jerusalem studio.

With "Lean Back" sitting at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and a performance slated for Sunday night's MTV Video Music Awards, Joey Crack plans to keep the momentum swinging his way with three new tracks. "Take Me Home," the next single from the Terror Squad album True Story, is already getting spins on some stations, and the first looks from Things of That Nature will be the street barn burner "You a Victim Boy" and the official first single, "Get Up," a Timbaland production coming soon. On that track, the general of the Terror Squad encourages people at the party — especially the ladies — to move something.

Joe says he joined forces with the acclaimed beat-miner thanks to his record-spinning Terror Squad brother.

"I seen [Timbaland], I always said what's up to him for years, but we never really talked. DJ Khaled was like, 'Yo, you and Tim really gotta do a joint. He's a legend, you a legend, I think y'all can make some new sh--.' "

Joe said once he and Timbaland agreed to align, they knocked out what he feels is going to be his next huge smash in a couple of studio sessions.

"It started up straight music, he played me the beat, the beat was crazy," Crack remembered. "Then I would come up with the chorus. I had to write the [lyrics] in the car. He's the type of n---a — I could tell — he wants you to do the song right there. He don't give you time to breathe with the track. I see it, he wants that left hook, that magic right there on the spot. Make it happen. The next day I came back, we arranged it all together."

On Monday Joe was in cahoots with another superproducer who has moved down to MIA — Scott Storch (see "P. Diddy, Others Agree: Miami Is Hip-Hop Heaven"). The man behind the sonic boom of "Lean Back" was finishing a beat for Things of That Nature at his home studio. Cool and Dre, Swizz Beatz and DJ Khaled are among the other producers whose work appears on the project. And for the third time, R. Kelly got down with Joe for a track.
